Sunday last saw the 2nd Annual Monaghan 10 Miler and 4 Mile fun runs being held, starting and finishing at the Four Seasons Hotel, and what a day it was! Over 350 participants ran or walked through the streets of Monaghan on one of the rare nice days of this summer.
The atmosphere was further enhanced by the presence of an Olypmic torch and the added glamour of the Red Bull girls. The challenging 10 mile race saw an increase in participants on last year’s numbers and shows that the interest in the race is building among serious and fun runners alike.
Balieboro runner Martin Fulton was a clear winner with a time of 54.43 with Monaghan’s Karl Kildea coming second in a time of 55.27. This was an amazing run by Karl who had won the Knockmany race over the mountains in Tyrone the day before and had been for a cycle that morning in preparation for taking part in a Triathlon in Las Vegas next month. Karl was not the only Muckno Triathlon member who ran on Sunday as part of their preparation and we would like to wish Karl and his brothers David and Stephen the best of luck when they head to Vegas with Dessie Duffy for this world class event.
Third place in the 10 miler went to Paul Finnegan of Armagh AC with a time of 57 minutes 49 seconds. The first Masters athlete to cross the line was Delphin Pimentel and he was 4th placed overall with a time of 58.03. The first lady home was local runner Donna Evans with a terrific time of 63 minutes 59 seconds beating second placed Maria Dolan from Rathfarnham WSAF in 65 minutes and 5 seconds. Third place in the Women’s race went to Fionnula Duffy from Blayney Rockets in 69 minutes 58.
The four mile race was won by Caomhin Kelly with 2nd place belonging to Patrick Murphy, both from Glaslough Harriers and Sean Husband of Monaghan Phoenix finished in 3rd.
A large number of people who are just starting out running took part in the 4 mile run having trained twice a week with a new jogging group that meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening at the Coral Leisure Centre at 6.45pm. This group was set up to encourage more people to taking up jogging and anyone interested in joining can come along and give it a go.
A special mention must also go to the ladies from Glaslough’s Jolly Joggers who turned up in their numbers as usual to run the 4 mile fun run. Thanks to Geraldine McAree and the ladies for their support.
This run couldn’t have taken place without the hard work of James Campbell from Mr J’s Barbers, Brendan Sherlock and the too many to mention by name volunteers who dealt with registration, organised goody bags, set up the course, handed out water, stewarded and helped out in any way. Thank you one and all.
The race also wouldn’t have been possible to organise without the many sponsors who came on board especially the Four Season’s Hotel and Coral Leisure Centre, Monaghan. Monaghan Town Council and the HSE were joined by Universal Graphics, Develish DJ’s, Duffy Transport, Muckno Triathlon Club, Barry Healy & Company Solicitors, PT Excellence Personal Training, Ronaghan’s Pharmacy, Emerald Water, Maguire International Ltd, Linwoods, Monaghan Tang So Do Korean Karate, Pinky & Perky, Bond Safety and Darren Tierney Personal Training as sponsors and we would like to thank them all for their help.
Thank you also to Monaghan County Council, Civil Defence, Gardai and Ballinode Community for their support.
The feedback on the day and on the Monaghan 10 miler facebook page has been very positive with many competitors already looking forward to next year’s race. There was a lot of praise for the course, stewarding and the organisation of the event and we look forward to seeing you all again next year. Full details of the 10 mile race positions, times and photographs can be found on the Monaghan 10 Miler Facebook page.
