TIDY TOWNS GROUP SAYS "HOLE IN THE GROUND" SHOULD BE FILLED…WITH WATER!
A novel and environmentally friendly possible use for the site of the stalled mixed-use development project in the heart of Monaghan Town – dubbed “the hole in the ground” locally – was ‘floated’ at Monday night’s meeting of Monaghan Town Council.
Contained in correspondence before the members was a letter on behalf of the Killygoan Tidy Towns Committee which requested the Council to “earnestly consider” allowing the site to become a lake or water storage area.
Advocating such a bio-diversity project in the location, the correspondence stated: “If you look at statistics and ‘global warming’, and the results in recent newspapers, you will see that water or the lack of it is going to be a very big threat to humanity’s survival.”
However, the correspondence was merely marked ‘read’ by the members as they were informed that planning permission had now been granted to the developers Clarkes to restore the area to a car-parking location.
Town Manager David Fallon informed Colr Robbie Gallagher that the decision to grant planning permission had been made on April 5. The Manager, replying to Cathaoirleach David Maxwell, said the developers were ready to start work.
