30 September 2011 No Comments by The Northern Standard

This year the National Day of Volunteering (NDV) will take place on Friday, 30th September 2011 and Monaghan Tidy Towns Committee are appealing to you to volunteer a little of your time to make a big difference to your local community. This year Monaghan Tidy Towns are going on an all out effort to paint a mural on the hoarding surrounding the proposed underground car park site adjacent to Monaghan Shopping Centre. We are asking for volunteers to come along on Friday 30th September between 11am and 4pm, grab a paint brush and help us to get started on brightening up this dreary area under the direction of our volunteer artists.
Emer Brennan (Monaghan Tidy Towns) comments, “Several people approached us with the idea of painting a mural on the hoarding along the “hole in the ground” site so we are more than pleased with the help organised by Monaghan Volunteer Centre and artists Grainne Kavanagh, Mary Mc Garry and John Nutley have offered. We have a chance to brighten up this area and volunteers can have a little fun adding their vision of Monaghan to the mural. There’s over 300 feet of hoarding so Friday’s work will only be a first step.”
“We’re looking for ideas from everywhere and everybody regarding the design of the mural. Anyone can contact Monaghan Volunteer Centre to register an interest in the design for the mural or if they just want to help out that’s OK. Depending on the feedback we might have one basic idea to which different groups can add their particular contribution or we might divide the “canvas” into several sections devoted to various groups. So individuals, community groups, sports clubs and anyone else who might be interested – you are all very welcome to get involved – there’s a lot of hoarding to cover!”
Monaghan Volunteer office will have a stand in Monaghan Shopping Centre on Thursday where people can offer their ideas. Paper and pencils will be provided! People can also volunteer their ideas on Friday 30th at the corner of the hoarding next to the rear of the Northern Standard yard.
The aim of the National Day of Volunteering is to encourage everyone in Ireland to give volunteering a try, so that everyone can learn that – even if it’s only for a minute, an hour, or a day – volunteering can make a big difference and be a lot of fun!
