Swanlinbar claims Monaghan champions broke the rules

Corduff’s reign as Ulster junior club champions could be a short one if Swanlinbar are successful with their objection to the constitution of the Corduff team that defeated them in the final. Swanlinbar have lodged an objection to the result of last Sunday week’s final with the Ulster Council on the grounds that Corduff played someone who was ineligible to compete in adult championship football as laid out in Rule 6.18 of the Official Guide. By JOHN GRAHAM

That rule sets out the respective age criteria for grades from Under 12 to Under 21 with the first stipulation being that to compete in adult championship football a player must be over 16 years, i.e. over 16 years on the 1st of January of the championship year.

Swanlinbar contend that Corduff substitute Padraic Keenan who came on during the second half and scored a vital goal within seconds of his introduction breaches that rule as they claim he was an Under 16 player with Corduff this year.

If the objection succeeds Corduff could be stripped of the title and the game awarded to Swanlinbar as per Rule 6.18 (i): Team Penalty: On a proven objection – Award of Game to Opposing Team with the possibility of penalties also being imposed on the player concerned, those in charge of the team and the chairman and secretary of the Corduff club. It is understood that the objection was due to be heard last night Tuesday December 21st in the offices of the Ulster Council in Armagh.

Should the decision go against Corduff they have the right of appeal.
