On Monday last a gathering of local business men and women met  in the Westenra Hotel for the launch of the Monaghan chapter of BNI.

BNI is a world-wide organisation in which chapters of business people meet weekly to  exchange referrals and testimonials, and to learn more about each other’s businesses.

The meeting was very well attended with just over 100 people there. The Monaghan or Diamond chapter has an initial membership of 25 and are hoping to bring it up to 45.

Many different business types and sectors were represented at the meeting. This became apparent as the microphone was passed around the audience and everybody got and took a chance to do a 10 second pitch for their business.

This was followed up by a business card swapping session where people where able to directly target others in the room they wished to give their card to or get a card from.

A representative of BNI gave a presentation to the audience explaining how the BNI worked and the philosophy of Givers Gain.

Gerry Duffy, current chairman of the Oriel chapter gave a speech outlining the success of the Dundalk chapter, He detailed how €750,000 worth of business has been referred between members in the last 12 months.

Niall Thornton who is the initial Chairman of the Monaghan chapter, gave a speech detailing the brief history of BNI Monaghan giving the  reasons why it was set-up and the plans for the future.

At the end of the meeting applications were distributed to all those interested.
