Debate on the project, which is facing a body of organised opposition in the North Monaghan area in the form of the Don’t Bypass The Bypass campaign group, was initiated at the meeting – held to consider submissions ...

Fine Gael TD for Cavan/Monaghan Sean Conlan came under accentuated pressure this week to recant his opposition to the N2 Clontibret to the Border road scheme, with some members of his party grouping on Monaghan Co Council publicly differing with their Dáil colleague regarding his stance on the issue. Disappointment was expressed by Co Mayor Hugh McElvaney that Deputy Conlan had reiterated his antipathy to the road proposal – which is the subject of a vocal opposition campaign by members of the Don’t Bypass the Bypass grouping in North ...

The construction phase of the controversial N2 Clontibret to Northern Ireland Border road scheme was effectively cast into limbo this week when Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar called a halt to major road developments because of the severe spending constraints facing the Government. The Irish Independent reported on Tuesday that the Minister had instructed the National Roads Authority to shelve 45 projects, 32 on the national primary route and 13 of national secondary status. The Clontibret to Northern Ireland route, which has generated a high degree of local ...

DEPUTY CONLAN UNDER FIRE FOR STANCE ON CLONTIBRET ROAD PROJECT

Fine Gael TD for Cavan/Monaghan Sean Conlan came under fire at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council from Sinn Féin’s Brian McKenna for a recent Northern Standard article which indicated that the Deputy was calling on Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar to bring to a halt the N2 Clontibret to the Border road project. Colr McKenna was sharply critical of the stance taken on this issue by Deputy Conlan, and his views were echoed by some of the Fianna Fáil councillors, with Padraig McNally asking ...

26 Nov 2010 Comments Off on Campaign group challenges justification for N2 Clontibret-Border road project

Statistical justifications being advanced by consultants Grontmij for the development of the controversial N2 Clontibret to the Border road scheme were strongly challenged by representatives of the “Don’t Bypass the Bypass” campaign group opposed to the project when they addressed the members of Monaghan Co Council at their adjourned November meeting last week. The delegation argued that traffic count statistics did not justify the development of the route as a dual carriageway, and urged the Council to reject such a proposal and instead carry out appropriate improvement and strengthening works to ...
