MONAGHAN UNITED FORCED TO SOUND FINAL WHISTLE ON AIRTRICITY LEAGUE INVOLVEMENT

Reasons “mainly but not only financial” have been cited by Monaghan United soccer club for their decision, announced on Monday, to withdraw from participation in the Airtricity League. Club Chairman Jim McGlone said the club’s involvement in senior soccer was no longer sustainable. In a statement on the club’s website, Mr McGlone said United felt it had no other option available to it because of the inability to tie down an anchor sponsor for the current season, which had seen them return to the Premier Division of the ...

SHOWGROUNDS SHOCK AS MONAGHAN OUST CUP HOLDERS

Monaghan United 3 Sligo Rovers 1 CORMAC JACKSON reports from the Showgrounds “I thought we played particularly well, we kept very, very calm, we were very concentrated and I thought we were worthy winners in the end,” was how Monaghan United boss Roddy Collins summed up the result that sent a seismic shockwave through the FAI Ford Cup second round at the weekend. The Mons continued their recent upsurge in form by knocking holders Sligo Rovers out of the competition in a dramatic Friday night encounter at the Showgrounds – a “revenge ...

KEEGAN STAR TURN HELPS MONAGHAN TO VITAL DERBY TRIUMPH AT ORIEL PARK

Monaghan Utd 2 Dundalk 1 CILLIAN O’DOWD reports from Gortakeegan N OUTSTANDING performance by attacking midfielder Jordan Keegan was pivotal to Monaghan United securing a vital away victory in the fervid derby atmosphere of Oriel Park last Friday night, when the Mons came from behind to inflict defeat on their north-east rivals Dundalk. The poverty of much of the football on display before a large – and, from the home partisans’ perspective, largely malcontented – attendance showed the challenges facing both sides in preserving their Premier Division status this campaign. But on a night when ...

MONAGHAN HAVE NO RESPONSE TO DERRY LATE SHOW AT GORTAKEEGAN

A LATE fusillade of scoring by Derry City put Tuesday night’s Airtricity League Premier Division clash with Monaghan United out of the home side’s reach in a bewildering flurry of late-on action that stood out in stark contrast to the indifferent footballing fare that had gone before. Roddy Collins’ side, desperate to improve on their poor home record, would have been hoping to profit from the Candystripes’ rather indifferent run of recent form that culminated in defeat in the Setanta Cup final last weekend to ...

MONAGHAN UNITED NEEDS YOUR HELP

Following a speical open meeting on Tuesday night last at Gortakeegan, Monaghan United Football Club is seeking assistance from the people of County Monaghan to help tide the Club over an immediate financial shortfall. With the Club winning promotion to the Premier Division of the Airtricity League , it had set a target of achieving Stadium and/or Main Shirt Sponsorship for the Season. Unfortunately this major sponsorship has not been obtained to date, despite the fact that several national Companies expressed strong interest in it. This has ...

RED MIST IS MONAGHAN’S UNDOING AGAIN AT GORTAKEEGAN VENUE

Bray Wanderers 1 Monaghan United 0 A well-taken header in the closing minutes by the impressive Jason Byrne did the damage on the scoreboard, but it was the recurrent curse of the red mist that proved a major factor in defeat for Monaghan United when they went down to Bray Wanderers in a largely uninspiring encounter at Gortakeegan on Friday. United’s talented but combustible midfielder Keith Quinn once again failed to see out the ninety minutes when he mistimed a challenge on Bray’s David Webster, and his dismissal was compounded by ...

MONAGHAN HIT LOW POINT AS CORK CRUISE HOME WITH SIX GOALS

Cork City 6 Monaghan Utd 0 By Peter Hughes Monaghan United made the long journey to Turner’s Cross on Friday night with what looked like realistic hopes of recording their first win of the Airtricity League Premier Division campaign against an out-of-form Cork City – but instead they slumped to their worst defeat in senior soccer for some considerable time as the home side found their scoring touch and a Keith Quinn sending off left United severely disadvantaged in their vain bid to stem the rout. Mons boss Roddy Collins will be taking serious ...

KEEGAN STAR TURN NOT ENOUGH AS STUDENTS OUTSMART THE MONS

UCD 3 Monaghan Utd 2 PETER HUGHES reports A STAR performance by Monaghan United’s Jordan Keegan, capped by a superb strike in the game’s finale, wasn’t enough to earn his side any reward on their trip to UCD on Friday night. United lost out by the odd goal in five in a highly entertaining encounter in which the passages of bright football produced by the visitors weren’t backed up by the high level of defensive concentration needed to thrive in the Premier Division environment. Roddy Collins’ side had the better of the chances ...

MONAGHAN LOOK PREMIER CLASS DESPITE DULL DERBY DEADLOCK

MONAGHAN UNITED’S first step back onto the plain of the Airtricity League Premier Division – taken at a largely populated Gortakeegan on Friday night last with Sean McCaffrey’s Dundalk the visitors – was a reasonably surefooted one despite a profligacy in front of goal that saw this north-east derby encounter end in scoreless deadlock. With a few months of expectant build-up following last season’s triumphant promotion march, and with traditional rivals Dundalk now helmed by a warmly regarded prodigal son in the form of the canny McCaffrey, this ...
