The retention and development of services at Monaghan Hospital remains a Sinn Féin priority, said the party’s Health Spokesperson David Cullinane TD and Cavan/Monaghan Dáil Deputy Matt Carthy when they visited the hospital on Monday last. Deputy Cullinane, who represents the Waterford constituency and was appointed as the Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Health following the 2020 General Election, said that local hospitals such as Monaghan could play an important role in alleviating pressures on larger hospitals as well as providing important services to local communities. Deputy Cullinane pointed out that ...

Reacting to a letter from the office of Minister for Health Simon Harris TD to the January County Council meeting regarding Monaghan General Hospital, Sinn Féin Councillor Seán Conlon stated the response was detailed, however added nothing new to established services, and proposed the following motion: “That this Council acknowledges the response from the office of Health Minister Simon Harris and seeks further information regarding what future plans are in place…

CALL FOR MONAGHAN HOSPITAL BEDS TO BE USED TO ALLEVIATE HEALTH CRISIS

The opening of closed wards at Monaghan General Hospital so beds there could be used to alleviate the serious overcrowding afflicting hospitals in other locations in the region was one measure advocated during a debate at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council. The failure of successive governments to address the high numbers of patients waiting on trolleys in Accident & Emergency Departments was also emphasised by speakers to a Fianna Fáil notice of urgent business calling on Minister for Health Leo Varadkar TD and the Fine Gael-led Government to take immediate ...

YOUTUBE VIDEO PUTS DR REILLY’S HOSPITAL PLEDGES IN SPOTLIGHT

By Michael McDonnell michael@northern-standard.ie The old adage about words coming back to haunt the speaker was, from a Fine Gael perspective anyway, painfully highlighted this week in a YouTube video that shows the current Minister for Health Dr James Reilly promising the crowd at a Monaghan Hospital rally in 2008 that the day he would let local hospital services be taken away when there was nothing to replace them was “the day I’ll walk away; I’ll retire”. The video of Dr Reilly promising the huge gathering in Monaghan’s Church Square in ...

Fears were voiced by some members of Monaghan Town Council on Monday night that the curtailment in the hours of operation at the Minor Injury Unit at Monaghan General Hospital could be a prelude to the eventual closure of the facility. Although Fine Gael representatives Tommy Hagan and David Maxwell (who is Cathaoirleach of the Council and a Monaghan Co Council representative on the North-East Health Forum) professed to have heard nothing to substantiate the alarm for the MIU’s future, other councillors interpreted as foreboding some of the statements ...

THE PROSPECT of a further cut in services at Monaghan Hospital drew ominously closer this week when it was confirmed to Cllr Brian McKenna at Monday’s meeting of the Dublin-North East Regional Health Forum that the hours of the Minor Injuries Unit at Monaghan Hospital will indeed be reduced significantly. It is understood by the Northern Standard that 1st November is the new date on which the HSE is hoping to introduce the change, and that this will see the opening hours at the MIU (previously known as the ...

By Michael McDonnell michael@northern-standard.ie TODAY’S crucial meeting with between local public representatives and the new Minister for Health Dr James Reilly on the future of Monaghan hospital comes against a background where it was reported in the national media this week that HSE managers in the Dublin-North East area have warned that the hospital might have to close altogether — if other controversial proposals to cut costs are not approved. Attending the meeting with Dr Reilly at the Department of Health’s offices in Dublin will be representatives of Monaghan Town Council, ...

Roadside birth prompts calls for restoration of Monaghan Hospital maternity services

The roadside birth in Smithboro of a baby girl whose mother was en route to Cavan General Hospital has prompted renewed calls for the restoration of maternity services to Monaghan General Hospital. Marie Fay of River Garden, Drumsheeny, Threemilehouse was being driven to the maternity unit at Cavan Hospital by her brother Eamon on Holy Thursday last when she went into labour. The vehicle pulled in at the side of the road and she gave birth to her daughter, Mary Kate. The incident has been described as ...

Monaghan Hospital gets long-promised CT scanning service

The HSE has this week stated that the long-promised CT scanning service has finally been established in Monaghan Hospital. Local hospital campaigners and political representatives had, for some considerable time now, been calling for the service to be put in place. The HSE said it was pleased to announce that the new CT scanning service has commenced in Monaghan from last Monday, 1st November and will operate two and a half days per week, on an “outpatient, non-urgent” basis. Patients requiring specific CT scans may now be referred directly by their GPs ...

Taoiseach backs hospital reconfiguration process

Any prospect of a reversal of Monaghan Hospital’s loss of acute medical status was more or less ruled out by Taoiseach Brian Cowen when he visited the county town on Friday evening to attend a dinner hosted in the Four Seasons Hotel by the local Chamber of Commerce. Speaking to reporters during an agreed “media doorstep” interview on his way into the hotel, Mr Cowen was asked by the Northern Standard  why more use could not be made of Monaghan Hospital, given that a number of services had been suspended at Cavan ...
