RAID UNCOVERS ILLEGAL FUEL OPERATION IN CLONTIBRET

Our photograph by Rory Geary shows the interior of a disused mushroom shed in the Clontibret area of Co Monaghan uncovered as the location for an illegal oil laundering operation in a raid by Revenue officials and Gardai yesterday, Wednesday morning. A Revenue spokesperson said that the plant had the capacity to launder approximately two million litres of fuel a year, at a loss of approximately €1 million to the Exchequer. The members of Co Monaghan Joint Policing Committee called at their recent meeting for more severe penalties and a heightened crackdown on criminals engaged in the production and distribution of illegal fuel products in Co Monaghan.
