People who had received household charge demands in error in Co Monaghan in recent weeks were given a forthright apology by Acting Co Manager David Fallon at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council. Mr Fallon said he would apologise to people on the Council’s behalf if there was a mistake made. He said mistakes had arisen because the Council was working from a database that had been supplied to them. The issue was first raised by P J O’Hanlon, who referred to representations he had received about ...

Some, we imagine, are confused or unclear ...

An eleventh-hour appeal went out from Tuesday night’s meeting of Monaghan Town Council to Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan to suspend the operation of the controversial €100 household charge until the public received full clarity on the revenue-generating measure. The Council adopted a proposal to this effect from Fianna Fáil councillor Robbie Gallagher, who said the introduction of the measure had been rushed and cited a series of problems with it including what he saw as the unfairness of the flat rate method chosen, and flaws in the ...

HOUSEHOLD CHARGE COLLECTION BEGINS IN MONAGHAN – BUT CO COUNCILLORS CALL FOR CHANGES IN SYSTEM

Between 200-300 people have already paid their €100 household charge directly at the offices of Monaghan Co Council and facilities are also available at Town Council offices throughout the country to pay the levy. This emerged at Tuesday’s Co Council meeting when the role that local authorities have been given in the collection of the charge – and in the pursuit of those who do not pay it – was outlined, and calls for changes in the operation of the controversial levy on private houseowners were made by the ...
