MCKENNA CUP EXIT

Cavan 0-16 Monaghan 1-09 By JOHN GRAHAM MONAGHAN’S interest in the Dr McKenna Cup was brought to an end as a sharper, stronger Cavan booked their place in the final at the end of this hugely entertaining and at times very exciting semi-final that was played in somewhat heavy going in Enniskillen on Sunday last. Monaghan enjoyed their best spell of game in the opening 20 minutes at the end of which they were ahead by three points but Cavan then started to come more into things especially in midfield with Eugene Keating, David ...

MONAGHAN PUT ON A MASTERCLASS AGAINST ST MARY’S

Monaghan 1-16 St Mary’s College 0-08 By JOHN GRAHAM After losing by four points to Derry in their opening game Monaghan needed a victory over St Mary’s College if they were to maintain any interest in this year’s Power Northern Ireland Dr McKenna Cup but the result of this clash in Clones last Sunday was never really in doubt even from the early stages as Monaghan proved the masters in most positions over the Belfast based students. St Mary’s had caused something of a surprise when they defeated Fermanagh last Wednesday night but on ...

RUNNERS AND RIDERS HIDING THEIR COLOURS FOR NOW

By Kevin Carney Dr. McKenna Cup results will determine the line-up for this weekend’s semi-finals. Right from the time of the draw for the groups, we knew that the winners of Monaghan’s group would play the winner of Tyrone’s group and, after last Monday night when UUJ pulled the pin on their Wednesday night fixture away to Cavan, we knew the Breffni county would be facing the best runner up. Last Sunday, Cavan cruised to a decidedly unflattering 1-9 to 0-5 win over Down in Kingscourt. It was another shot in the ...

NEW-LOOK MONAGHAN SUFFER CUP DEFEAT TO DERRY

Derry 2-15 Monaghan 2-11 By JOHN GRAHAM FOLLOWING on their recent O’Fiach Cup success Derry got their Dr. McKenna Cup campaign off to a winning start when they proved too strong for Monaghan in vital areas and at crucial times in this entertaining, high scoring affair that attracted a good attendance to the Clones venue on Sunday last. Derry fielded a team that was a mixture of youth and experience and it was those experienced players, particularly their midfield pairing of Mark Lynch and the returned Fergal Doherty along with James Kielt on the ...

MONAGHAN FACING A TRICKY HOME ASSIGNMENT AGAINST MEATH

By John Graham Last Saturday night’s Dr McKenna Cup final may have been regarded by many as something of a gauge by which to measure where Monaghan are at and what their prospects can be this season. The first silverware of the season was on offer but it was disappointment for Monaghan as Tyrone retained their Dr McKenna Cup title but this Sunday there is a far more serious agenda on the table when Monaghan open their Allianz Football League division 3 campaign with a home game against Meath in Clones. Malachy ...

Thirty players were used in the Dr McKenna Cup campaign but the Monaghan team to play Meath on Sunday will be fuelled in the main by the tried and trusted. by COLM SHALVEY Monaghan have little time to contemplate their Dr. McKenna Cup Final defeat, as the new season moves up a gear with the start of the Allianz National Football League this Sunday, when they host Meath. Monaghan and Meath, who were both relegated from Division Two last year, are tipped to quickly bounce back to the second tier. Meath ...

TYRONE DEFEAT HIGHLIGHTS SOME PROBLEMS DESPITE GOOD MCKENNA CUP

Monaghan’s Power NI Dr. McKenna Cup bid came to a crashing end in last Saturday’s final against Tyrone, despite a promising start at Armagh’s Athletic Grounds. Monaghan led for large parts of the first half an hour, helped by a Kieran Hughes goal in the 12th minute, but the wheels came off in a 15-minute spell either side of half-time when Tyrone outscored Monaghan by 3-5 to 0-1. Mark Donnelly scored two of those three goals, while the other came from Stephen O’Neill, with Monaghan mistakes contributing to each of them. ...

SIXTH TITLE IN TEN YEARS

Tyrone 4-11 Monaghan 1-10 BY JOHN GRAHAM TYRONE again proved Monaghan’s bogey team as they retained their Dr McKenna Cup title making for a sixth victory in 10 years. The score line would indicate that Tyrone won comfortably in the end and they probably did but the final outcome does not do justice to the contribution by Monaghan in this tough, uncompromising battle that was played in atrocious weather conditions in the Athletic Grounds, Armagh, on Saturday evening last. The result though must be taken in the context that Monaghan simply conceded too many goals ...

SO FAR, SO GOOD FOR MALACHY O’ROURKE’S MONAGHAN IN BUILD UP TO CUP FINAL

Monaghan’s participation in this weekend’s Dr McKenna Cup Final marks their first appearance in this Cup final since 2006. by COLM SHALVEY So far, so good. All Dr. McKenna Cup form comes with the ‘it’s only January’ proviso attached, but the early-season signs are positive after Monaghan qualified for the final and stretched their 100% record to four games. Malachy O’Rourke’s first month in charge has brought as many competitive wins as in all of 2012 and double the 2011 total. Winning is a habit that Monaghan had lost the knack of ...
