By Cianna McNally HOPES of securing an eleventh hour reprieve for the Ulster Bank branch in Clones suffered a severe setback when a representative of the bank last week suggested that one of the pre-conditions for this to happen would be the building and sale of 40,000 houses in the area! Many of those who supported the well-attended public meetings calling for pressure to be put on Ulster Bank to reverse its decision to leave Clones will view the comment regarding 40,000 new houses as clearly absurd — especially when looked at in the ...

CURRIN CRUISE HOME

Currin 2-13 Clones 1-05 BY JOHN GRAHAM A stronger, more incisive Currin booked their place in the semi-final of the McGuigan Builders Intermediate Football Championship with relative ease when they had 11 points to spare over Clones in strong winds and driving rain in Ballybay on Sunday evening last. Playing with the advantage of the elements in the first half Currin had things more or less wrapped up by the halfway stage when they led by 16 points with Clones failing to raise even one white flag during what was a torrid ...

Speaking at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council, Mayor McElvaney said he wished to host a meeting of the Council in the town of Clones before the end of his mayoral term. He suggested that the members could use the occasion to visit ...

Disappointment was voiced by the members of Monaghan Co Council on Monday when they learned that Waterways Ireland had failed to meet the six-month deadline for the furnishing of additional information to Clones Town Council in respect of the planning application submitted to the town authority for the Ulster Canal regeneration project. Members were told that while Waterways Ireland had met the additional information requirement in respect of the planning application to Monaghan Co Council, the lapse of the six-month period in respect of the Clones Town portion of ...

Despite lengthy correspondence over the past year and a major campaign by Clones Regeneration Partnership and local TDs, to extend the tenure of  the Ulster Canal Project Officer beyond a two-and-a-half year December 2012 review date, the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government issued a letter on 24th October informing the Chairman of its refusal to continue the funding for the local Canal Project Officer, Gerry Darby. Gerry has worked with Clones Regeneration Partnership over the last two-and-a-half-years and has raised the profile of the Ulster Canal ...

CLONES CLINCH IT THE SECOND DAY

CLONES 1-10 AGHABOG 1-03 BY COLM SHALVEY CLONES took full advantage of their second chance with a seven-point win over Aghabog in the Eurotech Junior Football League Final Replay at Scotstown last Sunday. Clones had been relieved to escape with a draw seven days earlier, but they upped their game to run out fairly comfortable winners against an Aghabog side who played two-thirds of the match with 14 men. Clones had suffered a string of semi-final and final defeats since being relegated to junior in 2006, including the ...

SUB SARTO SAVES THE DAY

AGHABOG 1-09 CLONES 1-09 BY JOHN GRAHAM IT WAS billed as one that had the potential to be a close encounter and that is exactly how it worked out as there was nothing to separate the sides at the end of this absorbing Junior Football League Final that was played in a good spirit in Scotstown on Sunday afternoon last. Overall a draw was probably a fair enough result as both sides enjoyed periods of dominance and both had also squandered chances, but overall Aghabog will have slightly more reason to be disappointed as they looked ...

JUNIOR LEAGUE FINAL COULD BE OH SO CLOSE

AGHABOG V CLONES JOHN GRAHAM Reports It is a limited yet a very attractive programme of games in the county this weekend with the final of the junior football league, the replay of the minor football championship division 3 final as well as the semi finals of the intermediate and senior football leagues. Both of Sunday’s Junior Football League finalists suffered early reverses in the junior football championship, Clones defeated in their first outing by Oram back on June 2nd and Aghabog defeated by Eire Og back on June 10th. Clones recovered though ...

DRUMHOWAN NEAR ULTIMATE GOAL

DRUMHOWAN 0-14 CLONES 0-09 BY JOHN GRAHAM A HUNGRIER Drumhowan brought a degree of intensity to this junior championship semi-final that proved just that little bit too potent for a Clones side who gave their all throughout but who could not prevent one of the favourites moving through to the final with a little bit to spare. Drumhowan were only headed once in the entire contest and that after just 30 seconds when Paul Shiels opened the scoring with a point for Clones but thereafter Drumhowan more ...

By Cianna McNally As previously reported in the Northern Standard, the six-day stone sculpture symposium entitled ‘Mór Chuid Cloch’, began in Clones on Monday, 21st May and will continue until Saturday, 26th May. Working in the Butteryard at the Creighton Hotel six sculptors from around Ireland, including two from Co Monaghan, will produce a sculpture each from local sandstone. RTÉ’s Nationwide programme filmed the symposium and some of the historical features in the town on Monday.
