JOB CREATION THE PRIORITY FOR NEW CO COUNCIL MEMBER

Supporting indigenous companies to create jobs and bolster economic development throughout the county was identified as a key priority by Fine Gael’s Peter Conlon when he took his seat as a new member of Monaghan Co Council on Monday. Councillor Conlon was coopted to fill the vacancy on the local authority created by the recent retirement of his mother Mary Kerr Conlon, who was present in the Chamber with husband Peter to see their son take up the position. Councillor Conlon’s aunt Geraldine and Monaghan Fine Gael officers Philip Kelly and Patrick Watters were also in attendance.

Councillor Conlon was formally proposed to fill the Co Council seat vacated by his mother by Fine Gael councillor Aidan Campbell, who remarked that it was great to see Mary out and about. “Peter is a Carrickmacross man who is very much involved in the community,” stated Councillor Campbell, noting his involvement in Carrickmacross Emmets GFC and the fact that he was married with three children. “We in Fine Gael are looking forward to working with him,” Councillor Campbell added, welcoming the Fine Gael party representatives and members of Mr Conlon’s family who were present in the Chamber.

The proposal was seconded by David Maxwell (Fine Gael), who noted that Peter would replace his mother who had served the county and her town for the last 40 years. “Peter will have big shoes to fill but I am sure he is well up for it,” Councillor Maxwell remarked, adding that it was a proud day for Peter’s parents to see their son become a Co Council member. After his co-option was unanimously agreed, the new Councillor Conlon was ushered into the Chamber to a sustained round of applause as he shook hands with the Council members and executive before taking his seat.
