MUNICIPAL DISTRICT BACKS CAMPAIGN FOR OFFICIAL RECOGNITION OF IRISH SIGN LANGUAGE

The Monaghan Municipal District marked the commencement of Irish Sign Language Awareness Week on Monday by adopting a motion from Sinn Féin local public representative Sean Conlon calling on the Government to accord official recognition to this form of communication. The motion echoed a call made this week by Cavan/Monaghan SF TD and Chairperson of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice and Equality Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin.

Councillor Conlon’s motion read: “In an effort to improve the lives and wellbeing of our deaf and hard of hearing citizens, that this Council calls on the Government to give official recognition status to ISL, Irish Sign Language.” Noting that he had tabled a similar motion at local authority level in 2012, Councillor Conlon told Monday’s meeting…
