The Canadian Ambassador to ireland Kevin Vickers will be the guest of honour for the Monaghan town Canada Day celebrations this Saturday, July 1. A much-expanded programme has been prepared for the second annual marking of the Canadian national day, which takes on added significance this year as it marks the 150th birthday of the country.

This occasion of sesquicentennial significance coincides with two other important anniversaries – the 80th birthday of Air Canada, who have provided major sponsorship for the Monaghan festival, and the airline’s celebration of 70 years connecting Irish and Canadian communities.

The Monaghan celebration event will highlight both the historical and current links between Ireland and Canada. With a focus on the past, influenced locally from a specific mass emigration experience dating back to the early 19th century, the events also promote the municipal twinning agreements in place over recent decades with….
