NON-NATIONALS WILL CLAIM MAJORITY OF NEW HOUSING PROVISION SAYS COUNCILLOR TREANOR

The majority of new houses being provided in Co Monaghan and across the country as part of the Government’s “Rebuilding Ireland” initiative would be occupied by non-nationals, it was claimed by Independent councillor Seamus Treanor at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council.

“If we built 100,000 houses tomorrow, 60% of them would have to go to non-nationals,” the non-party representative told the meeting. Councillor Treanor also stated that almost half the population of the Monaghan Town area now comprised people born outside of Ireland.

His comments provoked a dissenting reaction from a number of his Co Council colleagues, with Sinn Féin’s Noel Keelan expressing surprise that Councillor Treanor had not objected to the presence of people from Canada in the..
