CCTV CAMERAS NOT THE FULL SOLUTION TO LITTER BLIGHT

CCTV cameras have a part to play in detecting people who litter, but they are not the full solution. So said Environmental Officer with Monaghan County Council, Nial O’Connor, who gave a presentation on the issue of littering within Co Monaghan to the May meeting of Carrickmacross-Castleblayney Municipal District.

Having been informed by Mr O’Connor that there was one CCTV camera in the district and two in the Monaghan district, a number of the councillors expressed the view that more cameras were needed in their area to address the issue of littering.

During his presentation Mr O’Connor said that roadside litter was a big problem in the county and he cited disposable coffee cups and illegal signage as being covered under this type of littering. Abandoned cars had also become an issue in the last ten months.
