THE “VERY PECULIAR CASE” OF THE STOLEN MANUKA HONEY

A 50-YEAR-OLD Moldovan man who stole a number of jars of a particular type of honey from a Monaghan town supermarket — in what his lawyer called a “very peculiar case” — has been told to pay compensation and also to make a charitable donation in order to avoid a criminal conviction.

Tudor Boboc, of 40 Monfort, Monaghan had been charged with stealing six jars of Manuka Honey, worth €124.94 in total from Fleming’s SuperValu, Church Square, Monaghan on four dates during May of last year.

He pleaded guilty to taking two such items, worth €41.98, from the store on 8th May, and also to stealing a single jar of Manuka, valued at €20.99 on 31st May last year.

Charges relating to the theft of two jars on 15th May and one on 29th May were withdrawn by the prosecution.
