SCOTSTOWN’S MICHAEL ROONEY IS NAMED 2017 TG4 COMPOSER OF THE YEAR

SCOTSTOWN’S acclaimed composer and traditional musician Michael Rooney, whose ‘Macalla Suite’ to mark the 1916 Centenary delighted audiences in packed concert halls around the country, has brought what for him has been a landmark year to a resounding conclusion after being announced TG4 Composer of the Year for 2017.  

The centenary year has certainly been a busy one for Michael, now based in Sligo where is is a deputy school principal, who has seen his success with the specially commissioned Macalla Suite topped off with the release of a CD recording of the show as performed by the Macalla Orchestra.

Rooney is a prolific composer and widely regarded as one of the foremost players of the traditional Irish harp. The Scotstown man has recorded two CDs with flute player June McCormack: ‘Draíocht’  and ‘Land’s End’. He has also published four books of his own compositions: ‘Harp Tunes’ (2006), ‘Aifreann Gaeilge’ (2012),  ‘The de Cuéllar Suite’ (2012) and ‘The Macalla Suite’ (2016).

The Macalla Suite reflects the period of Irish history from the famine to the present day. Commissioned as ….
