DRIVING BAN FOR LITHUANIAN MAN WHO HAD CONTESTED 7-YEAR-OLD DRINK DRIVING CHARGE

A 50-YEAR-OLD Lithuanian man who was convicted of a drunken driving offence that occurred over seven years ago was put off the road for three years and fined €500 at last week’s sitting of Monaghan District Court — where the judge found against legal arguments put forward by defendant’s solicitor at a previous hearing.
Antanas Kazanevicius, whose address was given at the time as being 3 Cara Street, Clones (but who is currently understood to be living in Cavan town) was charged with driving with excess alcohol at Mullaghcroghery, Monaghan on 21st June 2009.
At the initial hearing on 14th November last, Garda Damian Helferty told the court he was driving a patrol car when at 10.50am on the date in question he saw a green Volkswagen Passat at Mullaghcroghery, Monaghan. It drove into the forecourt of Plant Motors, and witness pulled in behind it.
The garda said he spoke to the driver and asked for his driving licence. The man had indicated that he had very little English.
