Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy addressed a public meeting in Cavan’s Kilmore Hotel on Friday evening, November 25 entitled ‘Delivering for Border Communities’.

Mr Carthy, who is MEP for the Midlands North West constituency, was joined at the meeting by Cavan/Monaghan TD Caoimhghín O Caoláin.

The MEP said it was important for elected representatives to keep constituents informed on a regular basis as to the work they are doing on their behalf and to hear at first hand the issues of importance to local people.

“I think this is even more important in the case of MEPs, who operate in European institutions which often appear very remote from the day-to-day lives of citizens.

“There is deep and widening concern about the democratic deficit at the heart of the EU project and its domination by an austerity agenda which is causing so much hardship to people across the EU member states,” he told the meeting.
