DRINK DRIVING DEFENDANT (20) WAS CHASED FOR FIVE MILES BEFORE STRIKING PATROL CAR, COURT HEARS

A YOUNG Co Fermanagh man who was involved in an incident in which a Garda car chased him on minor roads between the Cootehill and Castleblayney roads out of Monaghan town last July — before he was eventually stopped after colliding with a patrol car — has been told by the judge that it was only because of his lack of previous convictions that he will not be going to jail.

At Monaghan District Court on Monday last, 20-year-old Zacch Donagho, of 46 Lurganboy Park, Lurganboy, Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh (and with an address at 14 Railway Court, Newtownbutler in relation to one of the offences) had pleaded guilty to seven road traffic charges relating to his driving of a van on 11th July last.

These included five counts of dangerous driving, at Corick, Cootehill, Co Cavan, and at Dunsinaire, Killyvane, Greaghglass and Moyles, all in the general area of Monaghan town, along with charges of driving with excess alcohol and of having no insurance at Moyles on the same occasion.

Inspector Ronan Carey said gardai had received a call about a driver acting in a reckless and dangerous manner on the Cootehill Road out of Monaghan. They approached the vehicle, a white 1999-registered Citroen Berlingo …
