The Halloween Firework festival is fast becoming one of the main local events of the year. Last Monday at the Monaghan Shopping Centre venue, a large crowd was in attendance for this year’s impressive performance.

The event is organised by local youth organisation, Foróige and supported by the Monaghan County Council as well as the local Gardai Siochana. Monaghan Shopping Centre, as ever, are the worthy hosts of the event.

The festival began mid-afternoon and possessed a carnival atmosphere with an outdoor marquee hosting the kid’s fancy dress disco. Face painters worked their magic on queues of kids while cartoon characters mingled with the family’s throughout. A group of young people entertained the crowd with a fantastic dance performance.
The focus then turned to the live music stage, hosted by Northern Sound maestro Sean McCaffrey. He introduced a number of local acts including Elaine Cunningham, Ellen Mc Ateer plus local bands Sidetracked and Litehouse. The main act of the evening was from Michael Lawson, RTE Voice of Ireland winner 2016.

Local councillor Paudge Connolly was on hand to help two young Foróige Neighbourhood Youth Project members to countdown the fireworks.

The town of Monaghan then stood still as the fireworks lit up the sky in a spectacular display.
