FEARS THAT CAVAN HOSPITAL COULD LOSE TRAUMA UNIT

A leaked report which recommends the downgrading of a number of hospital emergency departments sparked fears this week that Cavan General Hospital could lose its Trauma Unit.

Concern was expressed in Co Monaghan that the move could lead to local people having to travel to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, or even to hospitals in Dublin, if they suffered broken bone injuries or were involved in a serious road traffic accident – with local hospital activist Tommy Hagan calling on the members of Monaghan Co Council to lobby the Cavan/Monaghan constituency’s Oireachtas members to prevent the proposals being implemented.

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan/Monaghan Niamh Smyth has sought an assurance from Minister for Health Simon Harris regarding the future of the Cavan Hospital trauma facility.

The report of the Trauma Steering Group established by the last Government to examine emergency medical provision in Irish hospitals has yet to be published, but media leaks surfaced this week which suggested that nine hospital emergency departments including Cavan are earmarked for downgrading in its contents.

The report recommends that instead of being treated at the hospitals in question, severe trauma cases arising from road traffic accidents as well as patients with broken bones should be sent to the nearest major hospital where there were specialist doctors in place.

TDs in the areas where the cuts would strike came out strongly in opposition to them, while the prevailing wisdom of the political pundits suggested that the measures were unlikely to be successfully implemented by the current Fine Gael-led minority Government given its reliance on the support of Independents and the tacit backing of Fianna Fáil.

In Cavan/Monaghan FF Deputy Niamh Smyth said she was very concerned about reports over the weekend about the centralisation of specialised emergency departments in larger hospitals.
