NEW SUPERVISORY ARRANGEMENTS IN PLACE IN CAVAN/ MONAGHAN GARDA DIVISION, MINISTER TELLS DEPUTY SMYTH

New supervisory arrangements put in place in the Cavan/Monaghan Division of An Garda Síochána following a number of investigative “weaknesses” identified in the O’Higgins Report were outlined in a reply given in the Dáil to the Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil Deputy Niamh Smyth by Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald.

Deputy Smyth had submitted a Dáil question in relation to the filling of a vacant Garda Inspector post in Bailieborough, Co Cavan and expressed disappointment at Minister Fitzgerald’s response on this issue.

“This position has been vacant for weeks,” the FF TD stated, “and Minister Fitzgerald in her latest statement has completely washed her hands of the matter. I think it’s quite ironic that such a position can be left vacant in a station which was the focus of the O’Higgins Report.

“The Gardaí are under resourced as it is. It is vital that these senior positions are never left vacant.”
