Monaghan County Athletics Board congratulates Conor Duffy on his fantastic achievement in taking the gold in the 5000m Senior race at the National Track and Field Championships in Santry on Sunday 26th June . Conor lined up against the best 5k runners in the country and fought off all his competitors with a blistering last lap to take the county’s first ever 5000m National Title

As the athletes were released from the call room for 1.35pm starting time they were greeted by wet and blustery conditions. As the starter set them on their way Conor settled in about 10th position of the thirty starters. This was tactically a good place to set his pace for this very competitive race. Conor placed himself well moving to eight position with two laps to go it was any of these athletes for podium positions.

At the bell sub 4 minute miler another Conor ,C Bradley from City Of Derry AC made his move to close out the race. Duffy from Glaslough Harriers AC had been in these positions before and was not fazed by this bold move. Duffy gradually made his way up the field of class athletes to he was in third position, 120m to go , taking the race and commentators by surprise.

He was feeling in top form and he felt the power left in his legs his day for the top position was imminent. Conor was now entering the home straight he powered past Meath Athlete …
