FF DÁIL RUNNER TO BID FOR VACANT CO COUNCIL SEAT

Mike Durkan, who unsuccessfully contested the Cavan/Monaghan constituency for Fianna Fáil in the February General Election, has declared himself a runner for the vacant seat on Monaghan Co Council created by the election of Robbie Gallagher to Seanad Éireann.
In a statement this week, Mr Durkan confirmed that he would contest the party convention due to be held to determine who will be co-opted to occupy Colr Gallagher’s position on the county authority.
Members of the Dáil or Seanad are now precluded from holding local authority positions. It is traditional that when a casual vacancy on a Co Council arises in these circumstances, the party holding the seat co-opts a replacement councillor.
The FF whip on Monaghan Co Council, Pádraig McNally, stated at the authority’s May meeting last week that the process to determine the former Councillor Gallagher’s successor had been initiated, and the party expected to be in a position to put forward a nominee for co-option at the Council’s meeting on June 13.
