MONAGHAN COUNTY COUNCIL IS LAUNCHING A FREE MICROCHIPPING AND REGISTRATION OFFER FOR

15 April 2016 No Comments by The Northern Standard

Since April 1st, 2016 it is compulsory for all dog owners to have their dogs microchipped and registered on an approved database. Microchipping is carried out by most veterinary practices and involves the insertion of a microchip, which is the size of a grain of rice, under the skin of the dog, between the shoulders. This microchip contains a 15 digit number which can be read with a microchip scanner.

Registration involves the matching of the 15 digit number to the name, address and contact details of the dog owner on a private database, approved by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, which will release this information to veterinary practices and government authorities, in order to reunite the dog with its owner.

The lifetime dog licence costs €140 as supposed to €20 per year for the annual dog licence. So the lifetime dog licence is primarily for owners of puppies and young dogs. When you purchase a lifetime licence, you no longer have to worry about your dog licence expiring or renewing your licence. Now there is an added incentive for dog owners who have yet to get their dogs microchipped and/or registered, as they can take their dogs to participating veterinary practices and have their dogs microchipped and registered for free, when they buy a lifetime dog licence for their dog.

If you wish to buy a lifetime licence for your dog(s) and avail of this offer please contact Monaghan County Council Environment Section on 042 – 9661240.  You must first pay for your lifetime licence, either by card over the phone, or online at Monaghan County Council’s website online payments section, or by paying at the offices in Carrickmacross, Clones or at the Cash Desk in Monaghan.  You will receive a receipt for a lifetime licence with your name and address on it, either directly or it will be posted out to you if you pay over the phone or you will receive your lifetime dog licence if paying online.

You should then take your receipt or lifetime dog licence, along with your photographic identification, recent utility bill, and your dog to one of the participating veterinary practices listed below.
