SF TO NOMINATE DEPUTY Ó CAOLÁIN FOR CEANN COMHAIRLE POST

Sinn Féin will put forward the name of Cavan/Monaghan Dáil Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin for the position of Ceann Comhairle when the 32nd Dáil meets for the first time today, Thursday March 10.

The long-serving TD, who was his party’s Health Spokesperson in the previous Dáil, has described himself as “deeply honoured” to receive his party’s nomination.

Speaking to The Northern Standard, Deputy Ó Caoláin said that while he did not have an “exaggerated confidence” about being successful in the contest for the position, he was hopeful that his record of service in the Dáil and his adherence to the highest standard of parliamentary conduct would commend his nomination to the support of Deputies outside his party.

He has written to all his fellow members of the new Dáil congratulating them on their election to office, acquainting them with his nomination and requesting respectful consideration of his candidature when they are choosing who to give their No 1 vote to.

Under new Dáil Standing Orders, the election to the office of Ceann Comhairle will be decided by secret ballot among the 158 TDs when Dáil business resumes today.
