On Tuesday, 16th of February, the Monaghan Ski Group headed for the slopes of Lavarone, Trento, Italy.

The 60 strong group was made up of various degrees of experience from the beginners to the accomplished skier and the rest somewhere in between.

As the bus rolled away from John Joe Cunningham’s Bar in the early hours, it was clear that there was a very strong family showing this year with the O’Hanlons, Fealys, Gavaghans, O’Reillys, Clerkins, Treanors, Macs and McNallys.

The group was also joined this year by a considerable number from Cootehill who brought their own talents and professional expertise to the pack.

The conditions for skiing were sublime with fresh snow in the days before the local ski party landed and beautiful sunshine. The usual embracing welcome was provided by Freddie and his team at the Nido Verde Hotel.

Daily ski instruction was offered to every member of the group by a very dedicated group of instructors.

The benefits of that tuition became very evident as the week went on. When Tommy Marron and Sean McCabe took to the blue slopes, the good job done by instructors was acknowledged by all.

The group’s high energy levels were not just utilised on the slopes but also at the night time with entertainment which included karting, bowling and tobogganing.

A hugely important part of this trip has always been the karaoke night and this year didn’t fail to impress the local residents. There were some fantastic individual performances by the ladies and great entertainment by the male singers.
