Regret was occasioned across a wide area of Co Monaghan by the news of the death on Sunday last, February 14 of Mr Fred Fleming, Coolshannagh House, Monaghan, a leading figure in the local business community.

Mr Fleming was one of the foremost personalities in the development of the retail trade in Monaghan Town.

He opened the first self-serve food outlet in the town at Dublin Street in 1949, going on in 1972 to purchase premises at Church Square, which become established as one of Monaghan’s major retail outlets. The hard work and enterprising instinct of himself and his family members made the Fleming name synonymous with progressive business practices in the town and the provision of local employment.

There was an extremely large attendance from all sections of the town community at the service of thanksgiving for Mr Fleming’s life held at First Monaghan Presbyterian Church in Old Cross Square on Tuesday.

We confine ourselves this issue to extending sympathy to the late Mr Fleming’s family, relatives and friends.
