IN the Defence Forces reconnaissance is primarily assigned to infantry platoons and cavalry squadrons, and as a consequence to progress standards, the Infantry Weapons’ Wing began conducting an annual all-army competition some years ago.

Since 2013, the winning unit sends out   a team to represent the Irish Defence Forces in the prestigious Cambrian Patrio—the British army’s grueling 48-hour test of patrolling and military skills.

Following a silver medal being claimed by the Irish troops’ team in 2013, the 6th Inf. Bn., took up the challenge again last year alongside some 118 other teams from several countries and—to their credit—they claimed the coveted gold medal!

The Irish army’s spectacular achievement was featured in a recent issue of An Cosantoir, the Defence Forces magazine, and it brought the spotlight, indirectly to a Cootehill family with TWO champions—the Pilkingtons.

MILITARY SIDE

On the military front, Corporal Andrew Pilkington, son of Vincent Pilkington, was one of the winning army team which also consisted of Lt. Joe Glennon, Sergt Ryan, Cpl. Ward, and Ptes., Moriarity, Dunne, Sheriff, and Loonan.

Undoubtedly, it says much for the outstanding achievement by the Irish troops ….
