A 22-year-old man accused of assaulting a solicitor in the Monaghan Courthouse building earlier this month has been remanded in custody so a Probation Report on him can be prepared.

Gary Donohue, Harpur House, William Street, Drogheda, Co Louth came before last Friday’s vacation sittings of the District Court in Monaghan Town on charges alleging an assault on Ballybay solicitor Lynda Smyth at the Monaghan Courthouse building, Church Square, Monaghan on the date of the previous vacation sittings on August 14; and accusing him of using threatening and abusive behaviour on the same occasion.

As the previous sittings he had entered guilty pleas on charges that, at the Monaghan Bus Depot, North Road, Monaghan on August 11 this year, he had engaged in threatening and abusive behaviour and carried out an assault (the court then heard that Mr Donohue punched an individual in the face with whom he had been engaged in a verbal altercation).

Although medical reports on the defendant, including one from the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum, were before last Friday’s sittings, Judge William Hamill expressed dissatisfaction that a Probation Report that he had requested on Mr Donohue had not been furnished to the court.
