LOCAL AUTHORITY CHAIRPERSONS UNITE TO OPPOSE EIRGRID INTERCONNECTOR PLANS

The holders of the chairperson positions of Monaghan, Cavan and Meath Co Councils issued a joint statement this week reaffirming what they describe as “our total opposition to EirGrid’s plan to traverse our counties with a massive 400kV pylon-supported electrical cable as part of the North-South Interconnector project.”

The statement is signed “of behalf of the people of Monaghan, Cavan and Meath” by Noel Keelan, the Sinn Féin Cathaoirleach of Monaghan Co Council, and his counterparts Paddy Smith (Cavan Co Council, Fine Gael) and Brian Fitzgerald (Meath Co Council, Independent).

The chairpersons state that the granting of permission to the planning application lodged by EirGrid with An Bord Pleanála recently “has the potential to damage our respective counties, our people and our future for some of the following reasons: the impact on the rural and agricultural economy; future residential and agricultural development; devaluation of residential property and farmland; the impact on the landscape; and …
