Monaghan Co Council needs to appoint a specific official to the task of accessing funding from European sources, the Cathaoirleach of the Monaghan Municipal District has advocated.
Sinn Féin Co Councillor Sean Conlon moved a motion at the MD’s May meeting calling for an EU Officer post to be established in Co Monaghan in order to maximise the potential yield from a potential €100 billion that local authorities can apply for from Europe between now and 2020.
It was suggested during the debate on the proposal that Monaghan could pool resources with Cavan Co Council in order to establish such a role but Colr Conlon was insistent that Monaghan needed a county-specific appointment.
The Cathaoirleach’s motion read:
“That Monaghan Municipal District, recognising the wide array of EU funding streams that have made positive contribution to our region, and additionally have the potential to provide further economic and social benefit to Co Monaghan, requests of Monaghan Co Council to explore methods to improve this Council’s approach to applying for and securing funds, and that this would include the recruitment of staff to this specialised area.”
Moving it, Colr Conlon said there were vast funds available from the EU to benefit their region and he was ….
