SHARP EXCHANGES BETWEEN SF COUNCILLOR AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OVER HOUSING ISSUE

Whether there is a housing crisis in Co Monaghan, and whether housing waiting lists accurately reflect the level of genuine need for accommodation, were questions somewhat hotly debated at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council.
Chief Executive Eugene Cummins at an early point in the discussion objected to the tenor of a contribution made by Sinn Féin’s Brian McKenna, who denounced as “rubbish” comments made by Mr Cummins and predecessor Co Managers that the numbers of people on housing lists in the county did not equate to a crisis situation.

The Chief Executive told Colr McKenna that he was not entitled to describe fair comment as rubbish and asked him to withdraw the remark but the SF representative refused.

Chairperson of the Council’s Strategic Policy Committee on Housing, Fine Gael’s Ciara McPhillips, initiated the debate by referring to the monthly management report …
