FINE GAEL TD SEAN CONLAN ORDERED TO PAY €25,000 TO FORMER SECRETARIAL ASSISTANT

LOCAL Fine Gael TD Sean Conlan has been directed to pay €25,000 to his former secretarial assistant after the Employment Appeals Tribunal found against him in an unfair dismissal case heard over three days last October and December.

While the tribunal’s decision is not due to be formally published for another six weeks, its ruling was extensively reported in national newspapers this week after both sides were informed of the outcome on Monday last.

In the case taken by Deputy Conlan’s former employee Cathy Shevlin, the tribunal is reported to have held that there had be a “litany of breaches” of her employment rights, and that she had been threatened in a “wholly inappropriate manner” while she was on sick leave.

The tribunal, which was chaired by barrister Niamh O’Carroll Kelly, found that some of the breaches were “more serious than others’, and also that there were a number of inconsistencies in the evidence given by Deputy Conlan, who is a solicitor by profession.

The Fine Gael TD, who can appeal the decision, had dismissed Ms Shevlin, a mother of three from Castleblayney, in March 2013. He told the tribunal that her dismissal had resulted from issues of misconduct.
