U.S. MARKET WILL BOOST COUNTY MONAGHAN BEEF SECTOR

THE announcement this week that the Irish beef sector is in line for a huge boost as a result of the opening of access to the United States market has evoked a warm welcome from faming organizations in counties Monaghan and Cavan, as well as from representatives of civic bodies in both counties, who recognize the importance of the sector for the well-being of the local economy.

While there was also a welcome for the news from Oireachtas members for the Cavan/Monaghan constituency, a Carrickmacross-Castleblayney Fine Gael municipal authority representative, Cllr. Aidan Campbell from Castleblayney—-whose late father Mr. Leo Campbell was a founder-member and leading figure in Macra na Feirme in Co. Monaghan, and the former National Farmers’ Association which subsequently became the Irish Farmers Association—–said yesterday (Wed) it was hugely significant that Ireland is the first EU member state to gain access to the American market for beef.
