MINISTER ORDERS INQUIRY IN CARRICK CYCLIST’S DEATH

FORMER Minister for Justice Alan Shatter — who announced his resignation yesterday — has ordered a public interest inquiry into the death of Carrickmacross man Shane O’Farrell, the 23-year-old law student who was killed in a hit-and-run incident on 2nd August 2011.

Lithuanian man Zigimantas Gridziuska subsequently pleaded guilty to failing to stop at the scene and was given an eight-month suspended sentence. The defendant had a history of drug abuse, had 42 previous convictions and was already on suspended sentences in both the Republic and Northern Ireland.

It has emerged that he was stopped by a drug squad detective about an hour before the incident in which he struck Mr O’Farrell who was cycling on the N2 close to Carrickmacross. But he had been allowed to carry on …
