JOBS FOR THE BOYS? – SF MOTION CONDEMNS PENSION-HOLDERS RETURNING TO PUBLIC SECTOR EMPLOYMENT

A Sinn Féin motion moved at the March meeting of Monaghan Town Council called on the Government “to introduce a temporary moratorium on State-owned bodies re-employing those already in receipt of pubic sector pensions in respect of previous State employment.”

“We also call on responsible employers in the private sector to do likewise,” the motion, in the names of Colrs Donal Sherry, Sean Conlon, Pádraigín Uí Mhurchadha and Paul McGeown, stated.

Colr Sherry in moving the motion said he was aware of a couple of cases where retired public sector workers had secured new public sector employment, in situations where other people did not even get interviewed for the posts concerned.

“It is almost a ‘jobs for the boys’ situation,” Colr Sherry stated, branding the practice an unfair one when they had many young people at present emigrating to Canada, Australia and the US.
