The National Community Games Annual General Meeting took place last weekend, 21st and 22nd of February, in Westport, Co. Mayo. Delegates and representatives from counties throughout Ireland attended to voice their opinions and to work together to further the success of the Games in the future. Riveting discussions and debates fueled the weekend with tremendous results. As highlighted by National President Gerry Davenport, rows and battles ensued but friendship and the Community Games family spirit shone through and the happy faces departing Sunday morning proved this.

Monaghan were represented by NEAC Delegate Caroline McNally, County Secretary Sandra McCooey and County PRO Lisamarie McCooey. Many motions were passed seeing the re-introduction and creation of various U16 events from 2015. This is greeted with great enthusiasm as it will create more opportunities for teenagers to become involved and encourage more of our youth to become involved in a voluntary capacity when over the competition age limit. Also, the recently enforced over age limits were removed with immediate effect, enabling a greater age range of children to participate.

The election of officers seen a number of new youthful faces gaining positions, indicating a great start to the new Community Games year. Our very own Peggy Connolly was re-elected as National Director of PR and Marketing. We wish her and the entire board the very best of luck for the coming year.

Guest speakers Dr. Nazih Eldin (HSE), Minister Michael Ring and Kieran Mulvey (Irish Sports Council) commended Community Games for the work it does at Area, County, Provincial and National level. They highlighted the importance these events bring to communities and the benefits they instill to a child’s mental and physical health. Without the work of our volunteers this would be impossible, and we at Monaghan Community Games would like to thank all our hardworking volunteers throughout the year and encourage others to get involved.
