Households in the Monaghan Town area have been request to assist Monaghan Town Council in preventing the unauthorised disposal of waste in Hallowe’en bonfires.

In a notice circulated to residences in the town, the Council have warned that bonfire burning is a more serious threat to public health and the environment that previously believed.

“The traditional bonfires burned wood and straw,” the notice points out.

“Nowadays old tyres and waste material are used as fuel. The uncontrolled burning of this waste can produce many toxic chemicals.

“Waste materials from households and businesses should not be provided for the purpose of burning in bonfires as this is an offence under the Waste Management Acts 1996-2003.”
