KEEP ON RUNNING! 52 AND COUNTING FOR NEWBLISS MARATHON MAN
A Newbliss man has become an Irish record holder after running a whopping 52 marathons in just 32 weeks in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation.
The record had stood at 47 but Shane McCarville smashed this by running 52 marathons all over Ireland between January and August this year.
All the marathons were recognised by the 100 Marathon Club in both Ireland and the UK and by the Athletics Club Ireland.
As previously reported in the Northern Standard, Shane’s bid to create a new Irish record saw him complete a gruelling 10 marathons in 10 days in July and a quadrathon (four marathons in four days) in August.
Speaking to the Northern Standard Shane was understandably delighted with his achievement.
“I was ecstatic to cross the finish line in the last race in the quadrathon in Donegal as that took me up to my goal of 52. I was wrapped in a Monaghan flag as I crossed the line and with Monaghan beating Donegal in the Ulster Final the month before, this added to my delight and made the experience even more special for me.”
