MORE GARDA CUTS ON THE WAY? – FF TD SAYS MINISTER IS PUTTING MONAGHAN COMMUNITIES AT RISK

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter will be putting communities in counties Monaghan and Cavan at risk if he pursues more cuts to the budget of the Gardai.

This was the stark warning issued by the constituency’s Fianna Fåil TD Brendan Smith this week, when he raised concerns that the Cavan/Monaghan Garda District could be hit with more cuts to frontline resources in the coming months.

Deputy Smith told The Northern Standard:
“Cavan-Monaghan has already lost 6 community garda stations this year, Ballyconnell Garda Station lost its district headquarters status and the only remaining dedicated garda unit based in Monaghan was shut down without warning.

“Meanwhile, the border region has experienced a wave of burglaries, thefts and petty crime over the past two years and many people are left feeling vulnerable as a result.

The very last thing we need is more cuts to our community garda resources.”
