CROSS-BORDER FUEL LAUNDERING RAISED IN DAIL

THE public concern expressed by civic and community leaders and farming organisations in Co. Monaghan, and the adjoining Border counties, over the huge spate of fuel sludge dumping on roads close to farms and waterways by diesel laundering racketeers, led to a question raised in the Dail, prior to the summer recess, by Cavan/Monaghan Fine Gael deputy Heather Humphreys in relation to the effectiveness of the crackdown by the authorities in curbing the racket.

In the wake of a public disclosure that the costly clearance of the toxic sludge dumped on roads in counties Monaghan and Louth in recent years has cost both County Councils in excess of €4 million in local revenue, Deputy Humphreys asked the Minister for Finance the number of instances of fuel laundering detected in counties …
