WHERE ARE THE JOBS? – CO COUNCILLORS TO QUIZ TDS ON EMPLOYMENT ISSUE

“Monaghan Co Council cannot create direct employment, but it can provide the environment that supports new employment and enterprise,” Director of Services Paul Clifford told Monday’s meeting of the Council during a comprehensive briefing on economic development initiatives in which the local authority could play an important role.

The discussion resulted in agreement to a proposal from Fine Gael’s Hugh McElvaney, seconded by his party colleague Owen Bannigan, that a meeting be sought with Cavan/Monaghan’s five TDs to discuss the efforts they were making to bring new employment to Co Monaghan.

Mr Clifford said the Co Council had taken important steps to build competitive advantage into the local economy. Its level of commercial rates, at a rate on valuation of €56.20 was the fourth lowest nationally, as was their level of water service charges, which the county also had …
