NEW CO MAYOR SETS AGENDA FOR COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Sinn Féin councillor Sean Conlon assumed the position of Monaghan Co Mayor on Tuesday with an encouragement to his fellow members of Monaghan Co Council to pursue political, healthcare and community linkages which would see the Border become “socially, economically and politically irrelevant”.

Unanimously elected at the Council’s Annual Meeting to succeed Fine Gael’s Hugh McElvaney in the mayoral role, the North Monaghan public representative in a wide-ranging inaugural address pinpointed a number of opportunities for enhanced cross-Border co-operation which he hoped the Council could pursue in the 12 months ahead.

Colr Conlon expressed topical criticism of the country’s banking institutions for their role in the economic collapse and the pressure they were putting on those challenged by mortgage arrears, and accused the Government of adopting anti-democratic measures by abolishing Town Councils and pursuing other reforms that would lead to “a further detachment between government and citizen”.

He hoped the Co Council in the year ahead would progress ideas and initiatives that would enhance the lives and wellbeing of the people of the county and wider region.
