There was a good turnout of athletes from all over the province for the first day of the Ulster and Northern Ireland Championships at the Antrim Forum on Saturday last.

There was a good representation of athletes from the county with athletes from Monaghan Phoenix, Glaslough Harriers, Carrick Aces and Oriel competing in in very warm conditions.

Having finished third in the Irish Schools the previous Saturday Niamh Malone renewed her rivalary over 800m with Letterkenny’s Arlene Crossan and after a very exciting race Crossan just got the better of the Phoenix in a photo finish with only.13 of a second seperating the pair.

With such a large entry the the U15 age group the event was run as time trials and Carrick Aces athlete Shauna Kerley won he race in 2:28.36 which was good enough to see her take the Bronze in the event.

Later in the day Niamh Malone went on to take the Long Jump title with a best of 4.46m with clubmate Michaela O Hanlon taking the first of her …
