The Northern Standard has learned that the Building Committee of the Courts Service held a meeting on May 16th whereupon it agreed to recommend the closure of the Clones Courthouse venue, and the amalgamation of its District Court Area with that of Monaghan to the Board of the Courts Service.

According to correspondence received by Clones Town Council from the Courts Service, the recommendation came after a review of submissions and a detailed evaluation was completed.
The proposed closure will be an item on the agenda of the Courts Service Board meeting, which will take place on June 27th.

It was agreed at Monday night’s meeting of Clones Town Council that the local authority would submit another submission in a bid to save the local courthouse.

It was proposed that local solicitors be invited to a special in-committee meeting on Wednesday, June 5th to review the submission before it was sent to the Courts Service.

District No. 5 Judge Sean MacBride will also be invited to the meeting, but members were unsure whether his position would prohibit him from attending.
