The department of Justiice and Equality recently granted funding for the CARA, Adopted Physical Activity Centre, a collaborative venture between IT Tralee and the Irish Sports Council to run a programme of inclusion for people with disabilities in sport. CARA co-ordinates national initiatives and works through the Sports Inclusion Disability Programme in the Local Sports Partnerships in each county to improve opportunities and quality of provision of sporting activities for people with a disability.
This year to mark to International Disability Awareness Day on December 3rd, the Xcessible Initiative focused on running an “Inclusive Outdoors Initiative” to heighten the awareness of the benefits of physical activities outdoors and active healthy lifestyles. The initiative is running in partnership with the Institute of Technology Tralee, Irish Sports Council, Local Sports Partnerships- Sports Inclusion Disability Programme, National Trails Office, Mountaineering Ireland and Outdoor Education Ireland. Across the country a variety of activities have been planned as part of the programme and for the Cavan/Monaghan region an Inclusive Outdoor Activity day was held on November 27th at Tanagh Outdoor Education Centre. In total 21 people participated in on the day with groups from Steadfast House, Rehabcare Cavan and Rehabcare Bailieborough all attending the days activities, which were provided free of charge by Tanagh in return for which the CARA Centre will provide free Disability Awareness Training for all the centres staff. The participants got the opportunity to try activities such as open paddle canoeing, archery and wall climbing which was greatly enjoyed by all and thankfully the weather was nice given the time of year.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Tanagh Outdoor Education centre and their staff for supporting the Xcessible Initiative by welcoming the groups and providing the fun activities for them to try.
